Assisi

From Padua we headed past mountain villages,

Crossed the Apennines mountains
Past mountain lakes
And magnificent views

To Assisi.

As you can see the weather was wet but that did not deter the intrepid traveller.

We headed up through the gate in the town wall.

The town is steep with narrow alley ways.

There were buildings with beautiful decoration

On our way up to the Basillica of St Francis of Assisi .
This is the lower church begun in 1228.
It has frescoes by Giotto
The upper Basillica was started in 1239 and the body of St Francis is in the crypt.

We also visited the Basillica of St Clare who founded the order of poor ladies known today as the Order of Saint Clare.

There were great views from near the top of the town

In the morning it was misty before we left.

But turned into a lovely day for our trip to Sorrento.
